Article: Reflections on the Picha Encounters Biennial of Lubumbashi

07 October – 12 November 2017, Lubumbashi (DRC)
From 07/10 until 12/11/2017 the 5th Picha Encounters Lubumbashi Biennial takes place in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I have teamed up with the photographer Toni Mateu (http://tonimateu.com/) to visit Lubumbashi and to go and talk to local and international artists represented at the biennial, the organisational team, the curator and intellectuals invited to the Biennial. Toni will be taking pictures; I will be writing. The resulting account is published in the March edition of rekto:verso, the contemporary arts magazine (in French and in Dutch).
Under the French title Éblouissements (which refers to bedazzlements, glares, or even astonishments), the works presented during this year’s Biennial will offer a reflection on our ability to face visible and invisible forces, symbolic ones, imaginary ones, rational ones, in other words the many things and characters that govern our world. Artists and collectives like Jean-Pierre Bekolo, Sammy Baloji, Robin Rhodes, or Carsten Höller will be presented at various cultural venues in Lubumbashi. Besides a major exhibition of Congolese and international contemporary art, the Biennial will host monographic presentations, performances, a programme of African professional encounters, a film cycle, and debates.
